Wednesday was Fabric planning/shopping day - I hope you took advantage of some awesome deals from our sponsors! So while we wait for those orders to come in, we're going to do some research on accessories to complete our looks!

Today we talk about BAGS! Like the other pieces in our capsule, we will wear our bag every day, so how can we pick one that enhances our frame and compliments our wardrobe?? I've asked the bag-master herself, Miss Brianne of Ali Cat & Co to give us all some bag education!

Bag for your Body Shape? Honestly, I've never considered this thought. When I'm grabbing a new bag for the day, I typically pick my favorite style, or based on what activity I'm doing, occasionally match my bag to my outfit, but never have I considered what bag is 'Right for My Type".

However, I have been educated and I can now say that choosing the right bag style based on your body type totally make sense. Let's see how! The basic concept of "Right for My Type" is evening out your shape. There are 5 basic body shapes:

  1. Reverse Triangle: you have wider shoulders/bust, narrower hips
  2. Pear: you have narrow shoulders/bust, full/wide hips
  3. Rectangle : your shoulders/bust and hips are same size
  4. Curvy/Hourglass: you have a full bust and full hips
  5. Petite: you are shorter than 5'3"

Which one are you? Keep that in mind as you are reading.

If you are a Reverse Triangle: wider through the shoulders/bust and have narrower hips- then choose bag that adds width to your lower body. Examples are cross-body or messenger bags that hit at or below the hip. Check out these 3 bag patterns:

If you are a Pear: narrow shoulders with full hips - then look for a bag that will add depth to your upper body. Ideal styles are hand bags that you carry on the crook of your arm or an underarm clutch. You can also rock a longer strapped bag that has a narrow body. Bag ideas for you:

With a rectangular frame, you need to add curves around your hips so larger bags work well for you. However, avoid going SUPER over-sized if you are a skinny stick as it will only make you appear smaller. Straight frame is the perfect body to add those extra details like studs, fringe. Slouchy hobos are excellent choices as well. Your top bag picks:

Hourglass/Curvy/Apple - you need a larger bag as well, go for medium sized if a plus petite. Solid colors or vertical designs add length. Avoid extra small bags that will make you appear unbalanced. Large tote suggestions:

Under 5'3" - choose a smaller bag that will add height such a hip long straps, long vertical bags. Make sure the bag is scaled for your size. Crossbody bags:

It's it's important to remember where a bag is carried and the fabric design of the bag makes a difference in how it looks on your body and evening out your shape.

Hold the phone! What style of bag did we NOT mention? Clutches! Same equation as before, the clutch should balance your body.

  1. Reverse Triangle: have a medium-large-ish size clutch that you can hold down at your hip.
  2. Pear/Hourglass: Medium clutch to keep to tuck in at your under arm.
  3. Straight: wristlet to hold around your hips
  4. Curvy: any medium to large clutch will do you!
  5. Petite: small clutch to match your size.

Of course there must always be a caveat. While I do believe "Right for My Type" is great advice and definitely something to consider when purchasing a bag pattern, I do honestly believe that ANYONE can pull off ANY BAG. It totally depends on how to carry yourself, carry the bag, and how you design the bag. If you have a fabric you love and a bag pattern you love, I guarantee you 100%, you can pull it off. We all have our own style. If the bag fits your style, then it fits you!
