Oh my WORD, you guys are digging this idea! I'm so excited to have so many of you on board with this Capsule Wardrobe sew along! And while there has been overwhelming support for this project, it hasn't come without a few questions. So let's discuss those!
"ONLY 2 DRESSES?? I can't have a complete wardrobe with 2 dresses!"
Me? I could get by with one. Or maybe even none. But I LIVE in jeans. And if you do too, you might be groaning at the idea of spending the season baring your legs in a summer dress.
THANKFULLY for both my dress-fiending friends and my "just-jean"-a-holics, the Un-Fancy recipe I listed in the last post is just a suggestion.
The recipe again is:
9 pairs of shoes
Excludes: Workout Gear, Utility Clothes, and Special Occasion pieces.
We're talking everyday wardrobe only!
This is Free Notion, remember?? Here, we sew what we want. The given recipe is a great foundation, and can be tweaked for each individual. What these numbers really boil down to is balance. You want enough pieces that do double-duty to really make wearing this wardrobe feel fun and fresh - not quickly overused and uninspiring.
Don't let details like this recipe feel constricting - if this project isn't fun to undertake it's not going to be fun to wear, either. So let's approach this with humor and a flexible nature, shall we?? WE CAN DO THIS!
"But.. the shoes...."
YES. Same goes for the shoes. I've sewn my own wardrobe for two years, so shoes are totally my splurge items. I will probably shed a tear when narrowing down this season's selection. But they're going into the attic, not a black hole. If I need them, I can rescue them from their new dark, dusty - and ultimately, temporary - residence.
9 shoes far too many for you?? You go, girl. Treat yourself to a mani pedi with the cash you've saved with your super versatile shoe collection! If you really only have two pairs you wear though, make sure they're seriously earning their keep in your closet. Sneakers and flip-flops are great utility pieces, but unless it's medically advised or otherwise mandated footwear, I'm betting you could have a serious style upgrade with a cute pair of flats, or a simple summer sandal. And yes - there are comfortable and affordable styles of each! You're committing to sew your own wardrobe - doesn't that justify a new pair of shoes?? These happen to be my picks, but you can find similar styles at every price point.
Short Girl or Short Leg Tip - Embrace the pointed-flats trend! It gives the illusion of longer legs without killing your feet in pumps.
"A whole wardrobe of NEUTRALS though?? I love color WAY too much to live in neutrals."
Girlfriend - do you see those bright yellow shoes above?? I LOVE color! I'm not about to deprive myself of something I love!
But here's the great thing: There are many, many, MANY neutrals. I'm not just talking white, navy, tan, black, and every hue in between. I mean PRINTS that act like neutrals. COLORS that act like neutrals.
This should all start to feel very familiar. Because as sewists, we already have a serious advantage over the average capsule-building-beginner. We already know how to coordinate many colors and prints. Even if you haven't adapted this skill from children's clothing or quilt-making, you already POSSESS the tools you'll use for your capsule building. Each of us is capable of choosing any color(s) we fancy, and building a wardrobe around it.
If you have a print in your closet (or fabric stash, for that matter!) that already matches your love of color, you might already have your palate figured out for you! For instance - this preview of Summer Capsule Wardrobe sponsor Wanderlust Fabric's stash includes a super yummy tan-with-bold-pink-and-blue florals... even some YELLOW to tie in those epic Joyfolie flats of mine. Theoretically, I could craft my entire color palate around the ones present in this fabric swatch.
OR, maybe you've held out fabric shopping for this project, and want to start from scratch. In which case, let me introduce you to my color-coordinate not-so-secret weapon: Design-seeds.com. Here, I can browse hundreds of vibrant palates FULL of color - ready-made with coordinates in neutrals, and not-so-neutrals. They even have a whole collection for Summer! This one suits me well - and there's only one true "neutral" in the whole batch:
Already have a favorite wardrobe item you want to build your wardrobe around? You can browse design seed by color and find tons of coordinates to inspire the rest of your pieces!
So pour a glass of wine, or whatever's your pleasure, and do some stash-hunting or color palate browsing. TOMORROW... we SHOP! (You did do your "homework" - didn't you?? Grab three of your favorite wearables, toss them on your bed spread, and snap a quick photo of them. We're going to need them tomorrow!)
