Welcome, Sewing With Boys Tourists! Becca here, sewing for my just-turned-2-year-old son, Everett.
Like most sewing mamma with boys, I find most boy sews... uninspiring. Great boy fabrics are hard to come by (though there's an awesome selection here!), as are patterns beyond the "basics".
So naturally, I was PUMPED when I saw the Time to Travel book of boy's play and utility patterns! I love that I can sew for my little man, and not limit myself to boring t's or tedious cargo pants.
There are a lot of printables and patterns in the ebook, but I was immediately drawn to the Swansea bag for E. He sees his big sister trot off to school every week with her very own backpack, and this simple sac that is totally toddler-friendly (no complicated closures!) I thought, "now he can have one too!"
...And now he does. But he can pretty much fit inside of it! He loves it all the same, so he can carry Elmo around "hand's-free". ;)
I might experiment with printing the pattern at 70% or even 60%, but I'm not sure how that'd impact the fit of the bottom circle. Which, by the way, I opted to cut from scrap denim! I hope that adds to the durability of the bag, so it can survive the first few sleepovers this little guy goes on in a few years :) Let's not give him any ideas though - don't want him growing up TOO fast! (The kid-size here fits a pillow and a plushie, so it can certainly handle a pajama set and other overnight gear.)
I love the french seams in the construction! That strap is SUPER secure with extra stitching, and the inside of the bag is as beautiful as the outside. I lined mine (to hide the ugly seams from the whale-striped pieced exterior. If you can't find cute boy fabric, you can always try and make it, right??) and found no trouble top stitching through the extra bulk of the french seams.
All-in-all, it's a super fast sew with great utility for all ages! See Michelle's gromet version for more inspiration! I'm in LOVE with the jumbo scale of her bag.
