Despite my best efforts, I have continually found *THOSE* kid toys in my home. The ones that make noises, light up, make sounds - OR hurt like heck to step on!? They're the cockroach of kids toys, and they keep.coming.back. I can't donate them to Goodwill as fast as they sneak in via birthday gifts, Happy Meal toys, or the neighbor's kid's rejects. And then there's the issue of replacing them with their quieter, softer, mom-approved versions.
So when Stephanie asked her bloggy friends to stitch up some of her QUIET, SOFT, imaginative toys, I jumped at the chance!
THIS is her Little Driver Wheel:
From cut to finish, my son had a new softie in an hour! (File this one away in the "WHAT? You didn't pick up the birthday gift!?" sewing short list.) He loves it - because he can race around anywhere - and I love it because he can do so whilst firmly planted on the couch while I'm make dinner. (Dare to dream, right??)
I was actually surprised how big it was when all was assembled and stuffed. I showed the E-man how well it worked as a pillow and think I've thoroughly conflicted him as to his favorite use of his new toy.
The pattern calls for an accent fabric Crest, but I've been playing with my silhouette lately and wanted to give a "reverse applique" (for lack of a better word) a try using some scrap fabric. Adhering vinyl to the wool felt was a bit tricky, but time will tell how well it holds up.
The next STOP for this toy is the (real) car. I'm thinking of attaching it to his carseat - like one would clip a pacifier to a bib - and let him live his natural "backseat driver" role. Maybe then I can convince him that HE can "go" on a red light, and it won't bother him so much when I stay put ;)
